Ella's Birthday "Cake"!

Are you an insane dog parent like me? Do you cry because your pet is so cute? Do you do embarrassing things like talk to your dog while she is pooping? Do you sing the Gilmore Girls theme song to your puppy while cuddling? If so, you've found yourself at the right blog!
Seriously though, this little dog has changed my life. I love her so so so much. So for her birthday, she deserved something very special! I got the inspiration from an article in and old issue of Rachael Ray Magazine and another recipe over at 17 Apart. Her cake was essentially a mini shepherd's pie (fitting, since she's an Australian Shepherd). One of the best parts about this recipe is that I made Ella's portion and saved the extra ingredients, added more spices and seasonings to them, and made a version for Scott and me!
If you want to really treat your little furry best friend, make this for them and watch their little faces light up with glee!

Ingredients

1 large russet potato
1 egg
1 lb organic ground beef
1/2 cup frozen peas (save a few for decorating)
1 small carrot, diced (save a few for decorating)
1/4 cup shredded cheese

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Chop the potato and add it to a pot of water. Set on the stove over high heat and boil until the potatoes are fork tender. Drain, mash and set aside. (You may need to add a splash or two of milk to help them mash up.)

In a large bowl, mix together all the remaining ingredients and combine thoroughly.

Using a greased muffin tin, take small portions of the beef mixture and press into three openings on the tin, using enough mixture to fill them about halfway up. Make sure the surface is flat.

Bake for 40 minutes so the meat is cooked through. Remove from the oven and let cool completely.

Now, the fun part: the frosting and decorating! Stack the patties with layers of mashed potato in between each one.

Then "frost" the outside with the remaining mashed potato. Decorate with the reserved veggies. You can use any doggie friendly veggies to decorate!

I topped it with a candle and a small decoration that I found at the dollar store. We lit the candle and sang her "Happy Birthday"... This part was all for me, of course. Ella couldn't have cared less if we sang to her, and Scott probably felt a little silly, but they were both sweet and dealt with it for me. ;)

Remove the candle (if you're as crazy as I am to use one haha) and give to your puppy! They will enjoy every morsel!

If you want to enjoy the same dinner as your pup, use essentially the same recipe but make extra potatoes. To your potatoes, add butter, salt, pepper, and garlic. I cooked our meat mixture on the stove with onions, garlic, extra vegetables and spices. Then I simply put the beef in a casserole dish, topped it with the potatoes and a bunch of shredded cheese and baked in the oven for about 15 minutes.

Thank you for reading! Let me know what you and your little fuzzy pals think!
xoxo
